How to Make an Umbrella Hole in A Tablecloth?

Creating an interesting theme and color game with the tablecloth requires some technique if one wants to have umbrella fixed at the center of the table. Usually, the tablecloths do not come with the umbrella hole in it. We have to make a perfect round looking umbrella hole at the center of the tablecloth.

Being in a family of 4 to 5 persons, no one has time enough to sew a separate tablecloth. With these tips and tricks, you can make a perfect parasol hole for your garden table with any fabric you want.

Selection of Tablecloth

PVC cotton fabrics are one of the best fabrics to make an outdoor tablecloth. Wonderful looking PVC fabrics are available online with a variety of designs and sizes.

To Create a Hole in The Middle:

The best way to make a hole in the tablecloth is in the exact center of it. Take a measured tablecloth according to the length and width of the table. Fold tablecloth in equal quarters of equal lengths. A corner where no edge of the cloth is present will be the center of our tablecloth. It would be the point where we will cut a hole for our umbrella.

Measure the diameter of the hole in the table and calculate the radius of the circle. Take a campus with a led pencil on one side. Mark around circle boundary on both sides of the turned quarter's center.

The corner will be the center of tablecloth which we termed as the midpoint of the tablecloth. To avoid overcutting your cloth you have to use small sized scissors with precision.

Cutting on the same line you draw will give you a properly cut and a round-shape cloth piece leaving a round-shaped hole for an umbrella.

But this is not sufficient for now because if we leave the tablecloth as it is, it will start splitting into threads. Soon the whole cloth will be of no use.

We will use a fusible interfacing fabric made up of cotton and nylon which sticks with the cotton and stops its recently cut threads from splitting. It has a shiny surface and a rough cotton surface. This kind of cloth is also available in fabric stores.

We have to cut a bigger sized circle and one smaller hole equal to the size of the hole in the tablecloth, and we will use the small circle of cotton cloth as a support to draw a circle boundary on the interfacing fabric.

The bigger circle will define the boundary of the round shaped interfacing cloth. Sew the interfacing keeping the shiny side up on the front side of the tablecloth. When the sewing is done, cut the center-facing inner corners of the interfacing to create a bending position.

Bend the shining side of interfacing inside the cotton tablecloth which makes the rough side of the cotton come on the top. Ready your iron and iron the part of tablecloth coming in contact with interfacing. Interfacing will stick with tablecloth giving a good finish and proper look… And that's it!
